By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail – Benjamin Franklin.

Let me hand you over to Nigel Howle, leader of Howle Communications, a public relations and media services business supporting clients from the public and private sector.

This famous quote, attributed to Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America, applies to PR and marketing as much as to any other area of business.

I recently held an Introduction to Marketing and PR workshop with Chartered Institute of Marketing expert Andrea Chapman. The purpose of the workshop was to get people to think about strategy before starting to publicise their business.

The strategy need not even be complex. At a basic level, perhaps you should think about the mission statement of your business and then write down objectives; what is it you want to achieve?

A great starting point is to ask why people want to do business with you. Why would people want to buy your product or services as opposed to those of a business down the road?

After all, is anyone sure that Apple tech is better than the rest, or that Nike sell superior trainers?

Once you have your marketing plan, how about PR and social media?

Do you dabble in Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn? Do you make videos? How about writing a news release? What about Facebook advertising? The list can go on and on.

Once again, it comes down to a plan.

It is perhaps not a good idea to be a jack of all trades and master of none.  Take your time and maybe try to master one or two social platforms before trying more.

A PR plan is essential, if you want to target the media. Try and think ahead and also work out what media you want to target.

If you want to find out more, please do get in touch with Nigel – he’ll be happy to chat. You can send him a mail at nigel.howle@howlecom.co.uk.
